ATS Resume Checklist for Job Seekers in India
A practical pre-application review for creating a readable, relevant and truthful resume.
1. Start with a clear target role
A generic resume forces recruiters to infer where you fit. State a realistic target in the summary and prioritize experience relevant to that role. Avoid changing a past job title unless an explanatory equivalent remains accurate.
2. Use readable resume structure
- Use standard headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects and Education.
- Keep important information in selectable text.
- Avoid essential details inside images, icons, headers or footers.
- Use consistent dates and reverse chronological experience.
3. Match keywords with evidence
Identify repeated skills, tools and responsibilities in the job description. Include a term only when your experience supports it. A skills list alone is weaker than a project or experience bullet showing how the skill was used.
4. Strengthen achievement bullets
Use the pattern: action + context + outcome. Replace “responsible for reports” with a specific explanation of the report, audience, process and verifiable impact.
5. Complete the final quality check
- Confirm contact information and links.
- Check spelling of tools and company names.
- Verify every number and claim.
- Export the requested file format.
- Open the final file and copy its text to confirm it remains readable.
What an ATS score cannot promise
No universal score predicts selection across employers. Treat automated feedback as a way to find possible gaps, then apply human judgment and verify the final document.
